Blackjack Basic Strategy: Your First Edge Over the Casino

Blackjack Basic Strategy: Your First Edge Over the Casino

Why Basic Strategy Beats Guessing

Most casino games are pure luck. Blackjack is different. Every decision you make — hit, stand, double, split — affects the house edge. Play randomly and the casino's advantage can exceed 2%. Play with basic strategy and that edge drops to around 0.5% on a standard 6-deck game. That's a huge difference for your bankroll.

Basic strategy isn't card counting. It's a set of mathematically optimal plays for every hand combination, derived from millions of simulated hands. You don't need to memorize everything at once. Start with the most common situations and build from there.

At Philippine tables, from Solaire to City of Dreams, basic strategy works the same. The only variable is the number of decks and whether the dealer hits soft 17.

The Core Rules You Must Know

Before diving into the chart, understand the hand values. Cards 2 through 10 are face value. Jacks, Queens, and Kings count as 10. Aces count as 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand more. A hand with an Ace counted as 11 is called a 'soft' hand — like soft 17 (Ace + 6).

Your goal is simple: get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. The dealer must draw to 16 and stand on 17 (or hit soft 17 in some casinos). That fixed rule is what makes basic strategy possible.

Hard Hands vs Soft Hands

  • Hard hand: No Ace, or an Ace counted as 1. Example: 10 + 7 = hard 17.
  • Soft hand: An Ace counted as 11. Example: Ace + 6 = soft 17. You can't bust by hitting a soft hand.
  • Pair: Two cards of the same rank. These have special split rules.

The Basic Strategy Chart, Simplified

You don't need to memorize a 30-row table. Here are the key decisions that cover most hands.

Hard Totals

  • 8 or less: Always hit.
  • 9: Double against dealer 3–6; otherwise hit.
  • 10: Double against dealer 2–9; otherwise hit.
  • 11: Always double.
  • 12–16: Stand if the dealer shows 2–6; hit if 7 or higher. Exception: hit 12 against dealer 2 or 3.
  • 17–21: Always stand.

Soft Totals

  • Ace–2 or Ace–3: Double against dealer 5–6; otherwise hit.
  • Ace–4 or Ace–5: Double against dealer 4–6; otherwise hit.
  • Ace–6: Double against dealer 3–6; otherwise hit.
  • Ace–7 (soft 18): Double against 3–6; stand against 2, 7, 8; hit against 9, 10, Ace.
  • Ace–8 or higher: Always stand.

Pairs

  • Aces and 8s: Always split.
  • 10s: Never split — you already have 20.
  • 5s: Never split — treat as hard 10.
  • 9s: Split against 2–6 and 8–9; stand against 7, 10, Ace.
  • 7s: Split against 2–7; otherwise hit.
  • 6s: Split against 2–6; otherwise hit.
  • 4s: Split against 5–6; otherwise hit.
  • 2s and 3s: Split against 2–7; otherwise hit.

That's the core. If you remember nothing else, always split Aces and 8s, never split 10s or 5s, and stand on 12–16 when the dealer shows 2–6.

Adapting to Philippine Casino Rules

Not all blackjack tables are created equal. In Metro Manila, you'll find variations. Some tables pay 6:5 for blackjack instead of the standard 3:2. Avoid those — the house edge jumps by about 1.4%. Always look for 3:2 payouts.

Dealer hits soft 17? That adds roughly 0.2% to the house edge. If you have a choice, sit at a table where the dealer stands on all 17s. Also check if doubling is allowed after splitting — most casinos allow it, but some don't. Surrender, where you forfeit half your bet, is rare in the Philippines but worth asking about.

Table Minimums and Bankroll

Philippine casinos cater to all budgets. You'll find tables with minimums as low as ₱100 in some resorts, while high-limit areas start at ₱5,000 or more. A good rule: bring at least 20 times your average bet. If you bet ₱500 per hand, a ₱10,000 bankroll gives you a reasonable session.

How to Practice Without Losing Money

You can drill basic strategy for free using online blackjack simulators or phone apps. Set them to match the rules you'll face: 6 decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split allowed. Practice until you can make the right play without thinking.

When you're ready for real money, start at a low-limit table. Speed matters — the faster you play, the more hands per hour, which means more exposure to the house edge. Don't rush. Take your time on close calls.

One more tip: never take insurance. It's a side bet that the dealer has a 10-value card in the hole. Even with perfect strategy, insurance is a losing proposition unless you're counting cards. Skip it.

Basic strategy won't guarantee a winning session. Variance is real. But it's the only way to play if you want a fighting chance.
